Why do the NIR LEDs appear to be not working?

Near Infrared (800-900nm) is just beyond the visible spectrum (400nm-700nm) - hence it is invisible to the naked eye. You will actually only be able to see a small pink dot or perhaps a very subtle pinkish hue emanating from the NIR LEDs when they are 'on'. Please rest assured that there is a significant amount of light energy emanating from those LEDs and your Mito Red Light is in fact working exactly as designed.

How do Photobiomodulation (PBM) / Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) work?

The most well studied mechanism of action surrounding red and near infrared light therapy is increased MITOchondrial energy production in the cells. MITOchondria are tiny organelles that are the energy power plants of all the cells in our body. Red and near infrared light therapy helps the MITOchondria create more of that energy.

The specific photons found in red and near infrared light interact with a photoreceptors within our cells called cytochrome c oxidase. This interaction stimulates the mitochondria in our cells to use oxygen more efficiently, which allows the mitochondria to produce more ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Adenosine triphosphate is a complex organic chemical that provides energy to drive many processes in living cells, e.g. muscle contraction, nerve impulse propagation, and chemical synthesis. Found in all forms of life, ATP is often referred to as the "molecular unit of currency" of intracellular energy transfer. When our cells have more energy, they simply perform better and the body follows suit!

Are your lights "FDA Approved"?

Mito Red Light is registered with the FDA, however Mito Red Light devices are not FDA "approved". Mito Red Light devices are low / risk, general wellness products designed to affect the body through topical heating.

Under the 1976 Amendments to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) regulates the bringing of new medical devices to market. 21 U.S.C. § 360c. FDA classifies devices into one of three categories based on the risk they pose to the public. § 360c(f); see also 21 C.F.R. § 860.3 (2018).

Under FDA regulations, marketers cannot sell higher-risk products without premarket approval from FDA, a regulatory pathway that includes a rigorous review of safety and efficacy data. FDA, Device Advice: Comprehensive Regulatory Assistance: Overview of Medical Device Regulation: How to Study and Market Your Device: Premarket Submissions: Premarket Approval (PMA), available at https://www.fda.gov/medicaldevices/deviceregulationandguidance//howtomarketyourdevice/premarketsubmissions/premarketapprovalpma/

Lower-risk devices undergo a less stringent regulatory review, known as the 510(k) regulatory pathway, that does not require clinical data demonstrating efficacy or safety, only a showing that a new device is “substantially equivalent” to an existing device already legally marketed in the United States. FDA, Device Advice: Comprehensive Regulatory Assistance: How to Study and Market Your Device: Premarket Submissions: Premarket Notification 510(k), available at https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/premarket-submissions-selecting-and-preparing-correct-submission/premarket-notification-510k

These devices are typically referred to as FDA "cleared". The Mito Red Helmets, which contain lasers, have 510(k) clearance.

In addition, FDA has exempted some lower-risk devices, such as heating pads and topical heating devices that emit infrared light, (such as all other Mito Red Light devices), from the 510(k) regulatory pathway. Id.; see also 21 C.F.R. § 890.5550 (2018) (exempting infrared lamps from 510(k) premarket notification requirement); 21 C.F.R. § 890.5950 (2018) (exempting powered heating units from 510(k) premarket notification requirement). These 510(k)-exempt devices do not undergo FDA regulatory review before companies bring them to market.

FDA separately requires that manufacturers and distributors of medical devices in the United States register annually and submit a device list, a process known as “establishment registration.” 21 C.F.R. § 807 (2018); FDA, Device Advice: Comprehensive Regulatory Assistance: How to Study and Market Your Device: Device Registration and Listing, available at

https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/how-study-and-market-your-device/device-registration-and-listing

The purpose of this registration requirement is to inform FDA where medical devices are made, in the event of a public health emergency to which the agency must respond.

Mito Red Light, Inc's establishment registration can be found here:

What are the EMF levels?

There are four main areas of EMF that we discuss below:

RF (radiofrequency): Other than the MitoADAPT, none of our devices contain any bluetooth or WiFi transmitters. The bluetooth can be disabled on the MitoADAPT if the user desires to do so.

Magnetic Fields: Any electrical device running on AC (alternating current) will generate some kind of magnetic field. Hence why we describe our products as "Low EMF" and not "Zero EMF". Our battery powered devices (mobile units, belts, helmets) are DC current and have zero magnetic fields. Our plug-in panels do create some magnetic field. We have consulted with EMF experts and had our plug-in panels tested with highly sensitive commercial grade EMF measuring equipment - at the recommended usage distance the magnetic field can range from 0.0mG (milligauss) to ~0.5mG (above ambient levels). To put this in perspective, the highly conservative BioInitiative Report recommends an exposure limit of 1.0mG for 24/7 exposure for pregnant women and children. To further put that in perspective, ICNIRP has set a general public exposure level limit of 400 microtesla or 4,000mG! In sum, our devices put out little to no magnetic field and are much, much lower than many other household appliances.

Electric Fields: Our devices have been tested and have been found to generate no electric fields on the face of the panels. Additionally, the patent-pending MitoADAPT comes standard with a shielded power cable.

Flicker: Flicker is an artifact of AC (alternating current). All of our plug-in panels use specialized LED power drives to eliminate the flicker caused by alternating current. Our battery powered products  (mobile units, belts, helmets) are DC current and have zero flicker.

Our devices are engineered to have low EMFs. However, anything with electric current running through it is going to generate some electromagnetic field. At the recommended usage distance of 12+ inches our devices emit no detectable levels of EMF.

On balance our devices are going to be much lower in EMFs than other products because our lights contain only the electrical components needed to power and cool the lights (nothing extraneous added such as bluetooth / WiFi). Of particular concern are products which come with an 'app'. Having an app necessitates a WiFi / bluetooth signal from the device. Many times these devices can emit a signal even when they are not in use! This means you could be unknowingly polluting your environment with EMFs 24/7.

Do the tabletop panels come with a stand?

Yes, the MitoPro 300 x,MitoPRO 300+ and MitoADAPT MIN 2.0 come with a robust 180 degree stand that is attached to the light (as shown in the product photos). The MitoMIN 2.0 comes with a kickstand as shown in the product photo.

Does this have any Safety Certifications?

Mito Red Light devices are ETL Certified (5022991) meeting the highest electrical performance and safety standards in the industry.

Mito Red Light has also registered with the FDA.

Red and Near Infrared LED lights when designed and used properly are quite safe. Mito Red Light has a five year track record of providing safe red and near infrared LED therapy lights to thousands of satisfied customers.

What is beam angle and why does it matter?

Some LED light panel manufacturers use a wide beam angle of 90 degrees. The problem with using a very wide beam angle is that the power density drops quickly over distance. The angle that light comes out of a light source is the main factor in determining how the power density drops over distance. Wide beam angles (90 degrees) make the power density weaken very soon. If you are planning to use the light for a larger area (and therefore plan on sitting / standing back further from the device), a 90 degree beam angle typically is not the best choice.

Conversely, other light panel manufacturers may use a very narrow beam angle of 30 degrees. This design choice often necessitates the LEDs being packed closer together to avoid dead spots. This may mean higher 'peak' power measurements for the lights, but the devices tend to be physically smaller (due to the LEDs needing to be closer together).  Anectodical experience with 30 degree beam angle devices is that they can be uncomfortable to even briefly glance at. We consider 30 degree beam angle devices to be generally less safe and less user friendly than wider beam angle devices.

The Mito Red Light Panels use a 'sweet spot' beam angle of 60 degrees to ensure therapeutic power density at further distances, while maximizing for usability, comfort and safety.

What stand should I buy?

For our Adapt 2.0 and Pro+ Panels, you can purchase a floor stand for one unit. If you would like to use multiple panels at once the Universal stand is a great option.

Can the lights be mounted from the wall?

We do not offer any wall mounts for our panels. We generally do not recommend hanging the panels from a wall as many of our panels are heavy and weigh over 20+ lbs.

Can I use the light in my Sauna?

We generally do not recommend using our lights in any type of Sauna as regular exposure to high heat / humidity may reduce the life span of the LEDs.

Can you use an extension cord with the light?

Using a 3 prong extension cord is fine as long as the cord is rated for the power of the device(s). Some of our larger panels and multi-light arrays can draw significant current - it is important that the cord is rated to be able to handle the total current drawn. All of our plug in panels have the power consumption figures listed on the product listings. If you have any questions please contact customer service.

Usage Questions

How do I use my light?

Product specific usage guidelines can be found in the User Manual:

https://mitoredlight.com/pages/user-manual

Do I need to wear eye protection when using my light?

While there is a growing body of scientific research suggesting that modest amounts of red and NIR LED light may benefit certain eye conditions, Mito Red's plug-in lights are very bright! When using, DO NOT stare directly into the light emitting diodes (LEDs).

Eye protection is provided with each light and should be worn when facing the lights, particularly when NIR is active. The eye protection included is specifically designed for these wavelengths of light.

As an industry leader in red light therapy, Mito Red Light panel purchases now include TWO forms of eye protection: Opaque Protective Goggles and high quality, comfortable IR3 lens glasses  For customers wanting maximum light attenuation we also offer for sale extremely dark IR5 lens glasses. At Mito Red, customer safety is our number one priority.

Again, our Mito Red Lights are very bright and if you have any eye problems, or any other health conditions at all, please consult with a licensed healthcare professional before using a device like Mito Red.

Are there any contraindications? Can I use the devices too much / for too long?

For a detailed discussion of contraindications and other considerations please see our article:

Contraindications for Red Light Therapy

Also when it comes to Red Light Therapy.....

More is not always better!

There is an upside down U shaped response curve when it comes to red light benefits More is not always better! The great thing about Mito Red Light devices is that you can reap the same benefits in less time versus other products on the market.

For this reason, we recommend you allow at least 6 hours between treatments of the same area. We recommend no more than 15 minutes in any one session with panels and no more than 20 minutes in any one session for the flexible devices. We recommend using your device 4-10 times per week. We recommend taking at least one day off per week.

What is the difference between Red and Near Infrared light?

Red light is absorbed by the skin, boosting collagen production & aiding skin conditions.

Near Infrared penetrates deeper aiding muscle recovery, cellular renewal and joint pain.
