About the research on this page. The studies cited here investigate photobiomodulation (PBM) as a therapeutic modality and the specific wavelengths used in PBM research — not Mito Red Light devices. The wavelengths in our panels were chosen because the peer-reviewed PBM literature supports them. Evidence levels and study counts reflect the broader research base, not studies of our products. What the research shows

Our evidence rating: Strong for oral mucositis; moderate for post-surgical dental pain; low for burning mouth and orthodonticsUpdated Reviewed by Alexis Cowan, PhD

Oral health has some of the strongest evidence for light therapy, led by oral mucositis in cancer care. A 2026 meta-analysis of 7 trials found that light therapy cut the risk of oral mucositis from chemotherapy or radiotherapy by about half (RR 0.50) (Rojas 2026). In head and neck cancer patients, light reduced radiotherapy-related mouth pain with moderate certainty, although effects on saliva flow were uncertain (De La Hoz 2026). After wisdom tooth removal, light reduced pain over the first 72 hours (Mauriello 2026), and after root canal treatment it reduced next-day pain (Bonacina 2026). For burning mouth syndrome, red and infrared laser reduced pain versus placebo, with low-quality evidence (Okuhara 2025).

Orthodontics is the main exception. An overview of 40 systematic reviews found light speeds tooth movement by about 1 mm over 3 months, but concluded that current evidence does not support routine use in orthodontics (Reis 2026).

Based on 2411 indexed studies in this category, 1237 of them in people. These studies test photobiomodulation in general, not Mito Red Light devices.

What the evidence does not show

  • Routine use in orthodontics: an overview of 40 reviews concluded the evidence does not support it (Reis 2026, PMID 41723260).
  • Restored saliva flow after radiotherapy: pooled results favored light but were not significant (De La Hoz 2026, PMID 42782929).
  • High-certainty benefit in burning mouth syndrome: evidence quality was low to very low (Okuhara 2025, PMID 39871648).

Frequently asked questions

Does light therapy prevent oral mucositis during cancer treatment?

A 2026 meta-analysis of 7 trials found it reduced oral mucositis by about half (RR 0.50) (Rojas 2026).

Does it reduce pain after dental surgery?

After wisdom tooth removal, light reduced pain during the first 72 hours (Mauriello 2026). After root canal treatment, it reduced pain the next day (Bonacina 2026).

Does it speed up braces?

Low-bias studies show about 1 mm faster tooth movement over 3 months, but an overview of 40 reviews concluded the evidence does not support routine use (Reis 2026).

Methodology & important context

The published research indexed and referenced on this page studies photobiomodulation (PBM) as a therapeutic modality and the specific wavelengths used in those studies — not Mito Red Light devices specifically. The wavelengths used across our panels were chosen because the peer-reviewed PBM literature supports them: this is where published evidence is deepest, where dosing parameters have been characterized in human studies, and where clinical guidelines (such as WALT for inflammation and pain) exist. Mito Red Light has not funded or conducted registered clinical trials on our specific devices, and the study counts referenced here reflect the broader PBM research base — not studies of our products.

Where review authors graded certainty (for example with GRADE), we report their grade; other ratings are Mito’s summary. Study counts reflect peer-reviewed photobiomodulation research drawn from major scientific literature databases, peer-reviewed journals, and other published research repositories. PBM response varies meaningfully by person, tissue, condition, dose, wavelength, and session timing; outcomes reported in the published literature may not be replicable for every user. Mito Red Light devices are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. If you have a medical condition or are under a physician’s care, please consult your healthcare provider before beginning any photobiomodulation regimen.
