Mito Red Light's research content, clinical evidence hub, and product development are guided by a Scientific Advisory Board comprising researchers and specialists in photobiomodulation, mitochondrial medicine, light biology, and related fields. All clinical evidence pages on this site are peer-reviewed by credentialed scientists before publication.

Our commitment: every claim on this site about photobiomodulation mechanisms, clinical outcomes, and dosing parameters is reviewed against the peer-reviewed literature by qualified scientists - not marketing staff.

Current Advisory Board Members

Dr. Alexis Cowan, PhD

Princeton University · Molecular Biology | Postdoctoral Researcher, UPenn · Light Biology

Expertise: Photobiomodulation, Mitochondrial Function, Circadian Biology, Metabolic Physiology

Dr. Cowan earned her PhD in Molecular Biology from Princeton University's Rabinowitz Laboratory — one of the world's leading groups in metabolic biochemistry — where her research focused on circulating nutrient metabolism and central carbon metabolism. She subsequently completed postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania focused on light biology and its intersection with mitochondrial function and circadian rhythms.

With over 2,300 citations to her published work and current research focused directly on photobiomodulation and mitochondrial medicine, Dr. Cowan is one of the most qualified scientists in the world to evaluate the evidence base for red and near-infrared light therapy. She serves as the primary scientific reviewer for all clinical evidence content on this site.

Our Scientific Review Process

Each clinical evidence page on the Mito Red Light Research Hub undergoes the following review process before publication:

  1. Primary literature sourcing — all cited studies are sourced directly from PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), or peer-reviewed journals.
  2. Evidence grading — studies are graded using GRADE methodology (Level I through Emerging) based on study design, sample size, blinding, and replication.
  3. Expert review — each page is reviewed by a Scientific Advisory Board member with domain expertise in the relevant topic area.
  4. Dosing cross-reference — clinical parameters are cross-referenced against World Association for Laser Therapy (WALT) evidence-based dosing guidelines where applicable.
  5. Review dating — each page displays the reviewer's name, credentials, and the date of last review to ensure content currency.

About Dr. Edwards

Scott Edwards, MD, is the founder and medical director of Natural Radiance Aesthetics & Wellness in Scottsdale, Arizona. He is a triple board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in hand and microsurgery, with special qualifications in minimally invasive surgery and advanced reconstructive surgery. He is also separately board-certified in Aesthetics, Procedural Medicine, and Anti-Aging by the American Association of Procedural Medicine.

Dr. Edwards graduated from Cornell University and Georgetown University School of Medicine, and is an internationally recognized authority in hand and microsurgery. He served as the Fellowship Program Director at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, where, as a Clinical Professor, he trained orthopedic and plastic surgery residents and fellows in the treatment of hand and microsurgical conditions.

His deep expertise in hand rejuvenation opened the door to the broader world of medical aesthetics. Trained by the prestigious Esthetic Laser Advisor Academy, Dr. Edwards is a Certified Laser Safety Officer whose skills as an aesthetic surgeon and wellness physician have led him to pursue triple board certification in Aesthetics, Procedural Medicine, and Anti-Aging.

As a physician, Dr. Edwards understands how the body's symphony of physiology, endocrine and paracrine systems, healing processes, biochemistry, and metabolism work together in concert to naturally radiate health and beauty. As an academic professor and researcher, he values evidence-based treatments and will only offer therapies that are safe and clinically proven to make a difference. This commitment to integrated, evidence-based medicine makes him a valuable voice advising on the science of photobiomodulation and its intersection with aesthetics, wellness, and recovery.
