Red Light Therapy Skincare

Spirulina Extract for Red Light Therapy

BioPhotonic Skincare™ — Designed for Light

A new category of skincare formulated to work in harmony with red and near-infrared light. Every MitoAURA™ product is developed in partnership with Young Goose — a pioneer in biohacking skincare — and built around ingredients selected specifically for their light-responsive, antioxidant, and cellular-energy properties.

Unlike conventional skincare applied passively, BioPhotonic Skincare™ formulas incorporate ingredients with documented light-interactive properties: Spirulina phycocyanin that undergoes a Stokes shift under red light, LUMENZYME™ photolyase enzymes activated by visible light exposure, and antioxidant complexes chosen to support the skin's environment before and after light sessions.

EWG Green rated. Made in the USA. Vegan and cruelty-free.

What is red light therapy skincare?

Red light therapy skincare refers to topical products formulated to be used alongside red and near-infrared light therapy devices. Unlike standard skincare designed for passive daily use, red light therapy skincare is developed with light exposure in mind — selecting ingredients for their compatibility with, and potential interaction with, specific wavelengths of light.

Mito Red Light's BioPhotonic Skincare™ line incorporates ingredients with documented light-responsive properties — including photolyase-derived enzymes activated by visible light, spirulina extract with Stokes shift characteristics under red light, and antioxidant complexes selected to support the skin's environment before and after light sessions.

What is BioPhotonic Skincare™?

BioPhotonic Skincare™ is a category coined by Mito Red Light to describe skincare formulated specifically to work in harmony with light — particularly red and near-infrared light therapy. It is distinct from conventional skincare in that ingredient selection is driven by photobiological compatibility, not just general skin benefit.

The MitoAURA™ product line is the first BioPhotonic Skincare™ range, developed in collaboration with Young Goose, a pioneer in biohacking skincare. Every formula is EWG Green rated, made in the USA, and vegan and cruelty-free.

What is the difference between the MitoAURA™ Serum and the MitoAURA™ Body Spray?

Both products share the BioPhotonic Skincare™ philosophy and core ingredients including Spirulina, LUMENZYME™, and botanical extracts. The key differences are format and intended application area:

MitoAURA™ Activate + Amplify Serum — a concentrated oil-based formula designed for the face, neck, and décolleté. Features THD Vitamin C (lipid-soluble, pH-neutral), Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-12, Squalane, and Methylene Blue. Silky, targeted facial application.

MitoAURA™ Face & Body Spray — a lightweight water-based mist for larger body areas. Features Ascorbic Acid, Copper Tripeptide-1, NMN, Sunflower Sprout, Chamomile, Cucumber, Aloe, and Vanillyl Butyl Ether for a gentle warming effect. Ideal for body panel sessions and the MitoQUAD™ Belt.

Many users use both: the Serum for facial red light sessions and the Spray for body sessions.

Should I apply skincare before or after red light therapy?

MitoAURA™ products are designed to be applied immediately before your red light therapy session on clean, dry skin. This positions the light-responsive ingredients — including Spirulina's phycocyanin and LUMENZYME™ photolyase enzymes — to be present on the skin during light exposure.

The products can also be used after sessions and as standalone daily skincare. For best results, use consistently as part of your regular red light routine.

Which Mito Red Light device pairs best with which MitoAURA™ product?

MitoAURA™ Serum — best for facial sessions: MitoGLOW™ mask, or any panel (MitoPRO X, MitoADAPT, MitoPRO+) used on the face and neck.

MitoAURA™ Body Spray — best for body sessions: MitoPRO X, MitoADAPT, or MitoPRO+ panels for the torso and limbs, and the MitoQUAD™ Belt for targeted wrap sessions.

For comprehensive full-body red light routines, using both products simultaneously — Serum on the face and Spray on the body — gives the most complete BioPhotonic Skincare™ experience.

Can I use MitoAURA™ products if I don't own a red light therapy device?

Yes. While the MitoAURA™ line is formulated to complement red light therapy, both products function as high-quality standalone skincare. The antioxidant, hydrating, and skin-conditioning ingredients deliver benefits independent of light therapy use. Many of the light-responsive ingredients also interact beneficially with natural daylight.

Note: MitoAURA™ products are not sunscreens and do not provide UV protection. Always use a separate broad-spectrum SPF outdoors.

I've heard green tea is good to use before red light therapy. How does MitoAURA™ compare?

Green tea (EGCG) is a legitimate antioxidant that offers skin-calming benefits and is a reasonable choice before red light therapy sessions. However, it provides a single antioxidant mechanism with no light-responsive chemistry, no peptide support, and no cellular energy ingredients.

The MitoAURA™ line incorporates multiple complementary ingredients: Spirulina's Stokes shift under red light, LUMENZYME™ light-activated enzyme activity, Methylene Blue's redox cycling antioxidant action (in the Serum), Copper Tripeptide-1 for skin appearance support (in the Spray), and NMN for cellular energy. A green tea product offers one mechanism. MitoAURA™ offers a full system.

What is LUMENZYME™?

LUMENZYME™ is Mito Red Light's proprietary complex of encapsulated photolyase-derived enzymes — the same class of enzymes found in marine plankton that evolved to survive in high-UV ocean environments. Standard skincare enzymes work passively through chemical reactions. Photolyases are light-activated — they are energized by visible light exposure, which is why they are uniquely suited to skincare designed to be used alongside light therapy devices.

When energized by light, the LUMENZYME™ complex supports the skin's natural defense processes against environmental stressors, helping maintain healthy-looking skin following environmental exposure.

What does Spirulina do in red light therapy skincare?

Spirulina Platensis Extract is a natural source of phycocyanin — a blue-green pigment with documented light-responsive properties. When exposed to orange-red light around 620nm, phycocyanin absorbs that energy and re-emits it at a slightly longer wavelength (around 650–660nm), a phenomenon called the Stokes shift. This makes Spirulina a genuinely novel ingredient to pair with red light therapy rather than just another botanical antioxidant.

Beyond its light-interactive properties, Spirulina is also rich in antioxidants and phytonutrients that support healthy-looking skin.

Are MitoAURA™ products EWG Green rated?

Yes. All MitoAURA™ products are formulated exclusively with ingredients rated in the EWG Skin Deep® green range (scores 1–2) — the highest standard of cosmetic ingredient safety. The products contain no parabens, artificial dyes, synthetic fillers, or harsh preservatives. Both are vegan-friendly, cruelty-free, and manufactured in the USA.

Are MitoAURA™ products suitable for sensitive skin or rosacea?

Both MitoAURA™ products include several botanicals commonly used in sensitive-skin formulations (Aloe, Cucumber, Chamomile, Coccinia Indica, Eclipta Prostrata). The Serum uses THD Vitamin C — a pH-neutral, oil-soluble form generally better tolerated than standard Ascorbic Acid.

Two ingredients in the Body Spray warrant attention for reactive skin: Ascorbic Acid (low pH, can cause transient stinging in some) and Vanillyl Butyl Ether (warming agent that increases microcirculation, which may exacerbate rosacea flushing in some individuals). We recommend a patch test on the inner forearm before full use for any sensitive skin type.

Do MitoAURA™ products provide sun protection?

No. MitoAURA™ products are not sunscreens and do not provide UV protection. While several ingredients offer antioxidant activity that may help the skin manage oxidative stress from environmental exposure, none are UV filters. Always use a separate broad-spectrum SPF product when exposed to sunlight.
